Star Wars...
To me, the Star Wars Saga is one of the best stories ever written.
Notice I said stories, not characters.
Yep, anyone who is even a little bit analytical would know that there is very little character development throughout the Star Wars movies.
The only character that seemed to have any real development was Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is why most Star Wars movie fans love him.
Most people hate the Star Wars films, especially the Prequel Trilogy. But to me, I love all of them. Star Wars is amazing; even if Jar Jar is a part of it.
Episode 1 sets up the Star Wars Galaxy as far more sophisticated than anyone would ever had guessed if they had only watched the Original Trilogy. It shows how the government (the fabled Old Republic) worked. It also showed who these mythical warriors that protected the Republic and the Galaxy were; the Jedi. It showed that the Jedi were a huge part of the Galactic Republic, and played a major role in the Galaxy.
Episode 2 sets up the Separatists and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS). The CIS were obviously led by the former Jedi Master Count Dooku. This of course led to Obi-Wan's discovery of the Clone soldiers on Kamino, and eventually led to the beginning of the Clone Wars.
Episode 3 is the end of the Clone Wars, and the Rise of the Galactic Empire. It shows how easily it is to lose your freedom. Just as Padme put it, "This is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." It also shows the fall of the Jedi Order, after the execution of Clone Protocol Order 66, and the rise of Darth Vader - in a very pathetic way if you ask me.
Episode 4 is basically showing how there are freedom fighters/Rebels (depending on a certain point of view) trying to take down the Galactic Empire. The Rebel Alliance destroys the super weapon that the Empire created (the Death Star), and solidify themselves as a true threat against the Empire.
Episode 5 is about who Luke Skywalker is, and his bigger role in the Galaxy. He is trained by the remaining two Jedi Masters who survived the Great Jedi Purge. The Jedi Masters teach Luke what it means to be a Jedi, and how to face his fears. It culminates in the greatest cinematic revelation ever made - which is why Episode 5 is my favorite Star Wars movie.
Episode 6 starts off showing that Luke seems to have the potential to be falling to the Dark Side. It also shows him questioning his own motives. With him becoming the last of the Jedi, he returns to the Rebel Alliance and helps them defeat the Galactic Empire, by destroying the Death Star II and killing the Emperor and Darth Vader, the two Sith Lords who led the Galactic Empire. It also shows the redemption of Darth Vader because of Luke's belief in him.
But there is still the question of Character development. Unless you really wanted to know, I cannot help you. But if you do want the character development, prepare yourself for the best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Universe ever created.
If you are new to Star Wars watch the movies in this order:
Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, Episode 6.
Trust me, you will understand why when you watch them.
If you have already watched the movies and still think that they suck, I'm betting that it's because you couldn't relate to the Characters. Well as I've already said, the movies, especially the Prequels, have little to no character development. But I can help you out with that.
What if I told that Anakin Skywalker had an apprentice and her name was Ahsoka Tano. Surprised? Well it's canon now, so you better believe it. haha.
The amazing Star Wars the Clone Wars series, directed by the savior of Star Wars (lol) Dave Filoni, was a six season TV series based on the time period between the Star Wars Episode 2 and Episode 3. It beautifully connects the two movies together, as there are three years that take place between the two movies. In case you didn't know, a lot can happen in three years. The Clone Wars series really delves into the fact that the Clone Troopers weren't these mindless soldiers that followed every order. No, they were living people, who thought and felt emotions; often times copying their actions from their Jedi Commanders - i.e. Captain Rex and Commander Cody. It also shows the Jedi as being fallible, despite their reputation; which is good because it makes them more relatable. It also shows at some points the members of the CIS are far more complicated than the flat characters that we see in Episode 2 and 3. Count Dooku for example is extremely complicated, as he was Master Yoda's actual apprentice, like Obi-Wan was Qui-Gon's apprentice. The biggest thing about the Clone Wars series is the relationship that Clone Troopers have with their Jedi Commanders, which makes the execution of Order 66 in Episode 3 even more heartbreaking. The last, and best thing that the Clone Wars brings to the table is it shows that Anakin has an apprentice. Ahsoka Tano grows on you as the TV show continues, and culminates into a devastating blow to Anakin, making him question the Jedi Order even more, setting him up for Episode 3. Anyway, yes watch the Star Wars the Clone Wars.
Oh by the way, the Clone Wars TV show was kind of made out of order when it was first made. Go here to see the chronological order that you should watch the show in. Enjoy!
The next thing that will help Star Wars have more depth is the new TV show that Dave Filoni has directed - Star Wars Rebels. This show is perfect for explaining the answer to the question of how the Rebel Alliance came about. It also shows that not every Jedi was killed during the Great Jedi Purge. The biggest thing you have to remember is there are 19 years that pass between the events of Episode 3 and 4. 19 years! Even more stuff can happen during that time period. The Galactic Republic has been replaced by the Galactic Empire and Sith Lords, though unknown to most, are in charge of it all - Darth Sidious and Darth Vader. Star Wars Rebels shows how the Jedi bring hope to the situations that are a part of, and from the remaining Jedi a spark of rebellion is born. It brings back a loved character from the Clone Wars, where she ends up in duel that everyone knew would happen since they first introduced her in the Clone Wars. The show also explains what Vader was doing during this time period, and how the Emperor had created an organization of Force Users called the Inquisitors who help Vader hunt down the remaining Jedi who survived Order 66.
So yeah, you definitely want to watch this show! It continues to add the character depth that the Clone Wars TV series did, something that all movies sadly lacked. The TV series is actually still at this point in time currently on air, so it's not finished yet. It goes into it's third - possibly last - season on September 24, 2016.
But anyway, I'm sure that Star Wars Rogue One will still be an amazing movie because it seems like it will focus a lot more on the "war" part of Star Wars.
The next thing that I can recommend to you, on how to love the Star Wars series better is delve into Non-Canon - the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) that the Devil Mouse - Disney - killed. And if you delve into the Non-Canon EU, then I encourage you to look at Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (SWKoTOR), SWKoTOR II, and Star Wars the Old Republic (SWToR) games. They are all Role Playing games, that have without a doubt the best Star Wars stories ever told; and they no longer exist because Disney! The KoTOR games introduce an amazing character named Revan, and another character named Meetra Surik. ToR introduces you to the Star Wars Universe thousands of years before Episode 1. These stories should be made into a movie or TV series or something! They need to become canon. One of the biggest reasons is it will bring back meaning and context to the Prequel trilogy. You can't really fix the Prequel trilogy, but you can add to the world that the Prequel's create. KoTOR an ToR, if canonized, would probably help people understand the things that happen in Episodes 1, 2, and 3.
Light & Dark Side - One of the Most powerful Force Users ever...
Revan
And Disney killed him!
But I mean really. Watch these videos.
These are the trailers for KoTOR I and II.
These are the trailers for To; yep darker things were happening thousands of years before Episode 1- JUST LOOK AT THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT JUST IN THESE TRAILERS!!! WHY DISNEY? WHY?
This one is amazing though:
Anyway, Star Wars is awesome, and with a little context, I think more people would like it too.
Currently whenever I have a Star Wars marathon, I watch Episode 1, 2, The Clone Wars series, 3, Rebels Series, 4, 5, and 6. This is because it adds so much character development/depth to almost every character in the Star Wars Movies.
Imagine HK-47 being canon!
But Disney is just full of a bunch of Meatbags.
...yeah 7 doesn't exist lol Just Kidding!
I've watched it, but I just didn't think it was necessary. Why go after the events of Episode 6 when obviously cooler things were happening before the events of Episode 1. Imagine it; a Star Wars movie where thousands of Jedi and Sith are fighting each other...
But still, if in episode 8 they canonize stuff from the Old Republic Era, or potentially use characters from the TV shows; that would be awesome. I just don't think they should completely lose hope in the Prequels.
They should really make an Obi-Wan and Anakin movie between the events of Episode 1 and 2, cause that's about ten years I think. A lot can happen in that time frame. Plus they could really build on the Brother relationship that Obi-Wan and Anakin have; make it more heartbreaking when Obi-Wan cuts Anakin apart in Episode 3.
Yep the feels and Character development. Gotta love it :)
ENJOY STAR WARS!!!!
